August Continued Strong Growth in Machine Tool Orders

The annual rate of change in the GBI: Metalworking grew 27.1% in September, which was the seventh straight month of accelerating growth. The strong growth in the metalworking industry should lead to accelerating growth in machine tool orders throughout 2021.

According to the United States Machine Tool Orders (USMTO) report published by the Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT), July machine tool orders were 2,571 units and $552,311,000.

Unit orders in August increased 55.8% compared with one year ago, which was close to the same rate of month-over-month growth in April and May. August was the sixth month in a row with unit orders of more than 2,000 (2,000 machines ordered is a benchmark for a good month historically). August was the 11th month of growth in the last 12 months. As a result, the annual rate of change grew at an accelerating rate for the sixth straight month to 26.5%, which was the fastest rate of growth since March 2012.

In July, real dollar orders increased 79.6%. This was the second fastest rate of month-over-month growth since August 2011. As a result, the average price of a machine was $217,000 in August, which was the highest since April 2017. The annual rate of change in dollar orders grew 28.6% in August, which was the fifth straight month of accelerating annual growth and the fastest growth since April 2012. 

Compared with one year ago, the GBI: Metalworking was 15.2% higher, which was the 14th consecutive month of growth. The annual rate of change in the GBI grew 27.1% in September, which was the seventh straight month of accelerating growth. The strong growth in the metalworking industry should lead to accelerating growth in machine tool orders throughout 2021.
