June Real Durable Goods New Orders Second Highest Since March 2019
June was the fourth straight month that new orders increased more than 27%. Of course, this very strong growth rate in June was somewhat affected by slightly lower than normal new orders in June 2020 due to the economic lockdown.
New orders for real durable goods totaled $276,085 million in June 2021, which was the second-highest order total (March 2021 was the highest) since March 2019. Compared with one year ago, new orders increased 27.5%. June was the fourth straight month that new orders increased more than 27%. Of course, this very strong growth rate in June was somewhat affected by slightly lower than normal new orders in June 2020 due to the economic lockdown. New orders in July and August were somewhat lower than normal due to the lockdown too. Therefore, the rate of growth will continue to be artificially high through August.
June was the sixth consecutive month of month-over-month growth in durable goods new orders. The result was that the annual rate of change grew 6.2%, which was the second month in a row of accelerating growth and the fastest rate of growth since July 2012.
